Disability Sports Coach
Disability Sports Coach are the leading disability sport charity in London, with the mission of empowering every disabled person to enjoy the transformative benefits of sport. Only 17% of disabled people play sport once a week – half as many as non-disabled people,1 increasing the risk of conditions like cancer, stroke and heart disease. Disabled people are also more likely to feel isolated and suffer from depression.
The Charity runs 14 pan-disability community clubs spanning 13 London boroughs. Each supports disabled people in the local community to get active, build confidence, gain new skills and socialise. They also delivers inclusive coaching sessions in schools, colleges and community groups, while training teachers and coaches to confidently deliver sport to disabled children. Since 2013, the charity has reached 19,000 disabled people.
Covid-19 has ‘intensified the inequalities’ disabled people already face. The closure of their clubs means many disabled children and young people are deprived of the various benefits that sport and physical activity bring.
“There was a real risk that members of the disabled community could become even more isolated and lonely,” said Peter Ackred, Chief Executive of Disability Sports Coach. “We know just how powerful community sport can be for improving disabled individuals’ mental and physical health, so we are determined to keep people engaged, connected and active during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The charity then devised the Home Activity Programme, helping disabled people to keep active during lockdown. Since mid-March, charity has delivered:
• 320 packs of sports equipment delivered to vulnerable members across London
• 2,190 minutes of online activities, bringing members together virtually to keep active and reduce feelings of isolation
• 1,350 minutes of phone calls with members to help them feel connected during lockdown
In total, the charity has supported over 1,300 people through its Home Activity Programme.
